On the 29th of May, general elections will be held in South Africa to elect a new National Assembly as well as the provincial legislature in each province.

For the first time in 30 years since the initial democratic elections, there could be a change in the government.

South Africa is a one-party dominant state with the African National Congress (A.N.C) as the governing party (liberation party), who has always won an absolute majority in Parliament, and governed the country. This year there is a change in the system which could create a shake-up in the elections: for the first time South Africans can run for Parliament without being affiliated with a party.

Furthermore, rising crime and energy shortages seem to create doubt within the population. With its 61 million people, the country is going through trying times with a high unemployment rate of 32,1% (Feb. 2024), a crime index of 75,4, and growing energy supply problems, creating a growing lack of trust.

The country has been an example for the continent over the years with its developed economy and has attracted many from around the world with its wildlife and breathtaking scenery.

This sets Portugal as one of the best European options to offer unique investment opportunities with its booming economy, similar climate, and beautiful landscapes. Also known as the gateway to Europe, the Portuguese Golden Visa program which doesn’t require to stay more than 7 days per year in the country remains the most attractive option.

Portugal is the “Seventh most peaceful country in the world” by the 2023 Global Peace Index and has won many awards during the last couple of years, including the “Best Destination Award” in the European edition of the World Travel Awards.

Investing in Portuguese investment funds and the Portuguese Golden Visa could be the perfect plan-B for South African investors wanting to diversify their wealth in Europe in the next up-coming years.
